Skid Steer Loader Training

We are able to provide skid steer training courses to companies and individuals in York and throughout the UK. We are an approved UK Rural Skills training provider and are able to offer accreditation under UK Rural Skills or NPTC City & Guilds.

The aim of this training course is to give candidates a basic understanding of the knowledge & skills required for the safe operation of a skid steer loader. it will introduce candidates to the hazards & risks associated with safe operation. It introduces candidates to safely manoeuvring the machine both laden and unladen, how to comply with current Health & Safety legislation & relevant codes of practice. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements such as key Health & Safety legislation, codes of practice & practical sessions where you will receive plenty of hands-on experience operating the machine for loading etc.

The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee/instructor and the ability and previous experience of the trainees.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Carry out a risk assessment of the site, task & machinery being used
  • Understand current Health and Safety legislation, and codes of practice
  • Identify PPE and guarding requirements
  • Identify instruments and controls including, how to check the vehicle systems – how to check instruments, controls & hydraulic services
  • Explain the responsibilities of the driver for the skid steer and the load
  • Explain how to obtain information on previously reported problems with the skid steer
  • Identify problems that can occur when preparing the skid steer for driving or manoeuvring
  • Carry out required pre use checks
  • Check the skid steer systems to ensure the truck complies with operational and legal requirements
  • Check that any ancillary attachments are in working order & attached securely
  • Describe the risks associated with driving, moving, or manoeuvring the skid steer at different location
  • Identify problems that can occur when manoeuvring the skid steer
  • Mount the equipment safely making appropriate adjustments to the controls
  • Position the attachments for loading or travelling
  • Operate the skid steer smoothly maintaining stability of both the truck and load on various terrain
  • Operate the skid steer in a confined area
  • Demonstrate the safe stop procedure
  • Describe post use checks
  • Explain how & where to clean the machine & PPE requirements
