Tractor Mounted Hedge & Verge Cutter Training

We are able to provide Tractor Mounted hedge & verge cutter training courses to companies and individuals in York and throughout the UK. We are an approved UK Rural Skills training provider and are able to offer accreditation under UK Rural Skills or NPTC City & Guilds.

The aim of this training course is to give candidates with tractor driving experience & knowledge & basic understanding of skills required in order to operate a tractor mounted side arm flail for Hedge & verge cutting, it will introduce candidates to the hazards & risks associated with cutting hedges & grass, how to comply with current Health & Safety legislation & relevant codes of practice. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements such as key Health & Safety legislation, codes of practice, road use and practical sessions where you will receive plenty of hands-on experience operating the machine for Hedge & Grass cutting.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Carry out a risk assessment of the site, task & machinery being used
  • Understand current Health and Safety legislation, and codes of practice
  • Identify PPE and guarding requirements
  • Carry out pre-start checks and adjustments using the handbook or checklist on prime mower & hedge/verge cutter
  • Identify the controls
  • Inspect the area to be cut for Health & Safety & environmental concerns
  • Understand the added dangers of operating on the highway or other areas to which the public have access to
  • Identify any warning devices or safety functions
  • Describe/demonstrate how to make adjustments to the cutting unit
  • Take into consideration any changes in weather and ground conditions, and types of terrain that could affect the handling & safety of the machine.
  • Identify any hazards and obstacles which could be encountered during the operation and what control measures can be implemented
  • Operate the machine demonstrating appropriate cuts, i.e. cut a hedge, side, top & bottom.
  • Demonstrate negotiating obstacles trees, signs etc
  • Set machine for road transport
  • Demonstrate the safe stop procedure
  • Describe post use checks to prime mover & side arm
  • Explain how & where to clean the machine & PPE requirements

The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee/instructor and the ability and previous experience of the trainees.
