180° Excavator Training

We are able to provide 180° Excavator training courses to companies and individuals in York and throughout the UK. We are an Accredited AITT training provider, and an approved UK Rural Skills training provider and are able to offer accreditation under UK Rural Skills or NPTC City & Guilds.

The aim of these training courses is to give candidates the knowledge & basic understanding of skills required in order to safely operate a 180° Excavator. It will introduce candidates to the hazards & risks associated with 180° excavators. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements such as key Health & Safety legislation, codes of practice, road use and practical sessions where you will learn to manoeuvre the machine, set it to work position, excavate & reinstate & load using the excavator & front loader.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Carry out a risk assessment of the site, task & machinery being used
  • Understand current Health and Safety legislation, and codes of practice.
  • Identify PPE and guarding requirements.
  • Understand the relevance of HASAWA, PUWER and LOLER.
  • Carry out required pre use checks and identify the parts and controls of the excavator.
  • Set the machine for site & road travel.
  • Explain the legal requirements for road use.
  • Travel over different types of ground including inclines, both with and without a load.
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse directions,
  • Set the machine up to excavate.
  • Excavate below ground level in different ground types.
  • Place the spoil into stock piles & load vehicles/trailers.
  • Reinstate excavations & level different types of materials.
  • Remove & re attach the buckets/attachments.
  • Use the front loader.
  • Park & secure the machine following the correct safe stop procedures.
  • Carry out post use checks.
  • Describe how to place the counterbalance in an out-of-service condition.
  • Position the excavator and any attachments used in an authorised position, location or parking bay as appropriate when not in use.
  • Mount & dismount the excavator safely.
  • Explain how & where to clean the machine & PPE requirements.

The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee/instructor and the ability and previous experience of the trainees. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements.

Candidates must be aged 16 or over.
