Loading Shovel Training

We are able to provide Loading Shovel training courses to companies and individuals in York and throughout the UK. We are an Accredited AITT training provider, and an approved UK Rural Skills training provider and are able to offer accreditation under UK Rural Skills or NPTC City & Guilds.

The aim of this training course is to give candidates the knowledge & basic understanding of skills required in order to safely operate a Loading Shovel. It will introduce candidates to the hazards & risks associated with a loading shovel. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements such as key Health & Safety legislation, codes of practice, road use and practical sessions where you will learn to manoeuvre the machine, load material into hoppers/trailers and form a stock pile.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • Carry out a risk assessment of the site, task & machinery being used
  • Understand current Health and Safety legislation, and codes of practice.
  • Identify PPE and guarding requirements.
  • Understand the relevance of HASAWA, PUWER and LOLER.
  • Carry out required pre use checks and identify the parts and controls of the loading shovel.
  • Set the machine for site & road travel.
  • Explain the legal requirements for road use.
  • Travel over different types of ground including inclines, both with and without a load.
  • Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse directions,
  • Set the machine up to load lorries trailers etc.
  • Comply with all safety requirements while being loaded.
  • Check load integrity & security.
  • Correctly discharge loads into trenches & over edges.
  • Park & secure the machine following the correct safe stop procedures.
  • Carry out post use checks.
  • Describe how to place the loading shovel in an out-of-service condition.
  • Park & secure the loading shovel in a safe position.
  • Mount & dismount the loading shovel safely.
  • Explain how & where to clean the machine & PPE requirements.

The length of training may vary depending on the objectives covered, the ratio of trainee/instructor and the ability and previous experience of the trainees. The delivery of training covers a mix of both theory and practical elements.

Candidates must be aged 16 or over.
